Re: Dialysis Patient Care Technician - Provo ( Utah Valley - UT ) (Job
Number: 093006)

To Whom It May Concern:
With regard to the above position with your firm, I am very interested in
working with patients and not only being able to help them with their dialysis process, but I am also interested in giving personal care that will provide the patient comfort as well. My father-in-law was on dialysis for many years and I know how uncomfortable physically and mentally it can be for someone to do this day to day. He had some wonderful technicians working with him and they made things as easy as possible for him and I would love to do the same for others having to experience dialysis.
I am a pre-nursing student at UVU and am willing to take classes for any certification necessary to work at your facility. I have many prerequisite courses to complete before I can apply to the nursing program so I am looking for long term employment. Thank you in advance for your consideration and look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Kristi Footit

L9-Find an Internship

L9-Find an Internship

Alpha Home Health & Hospice- www.alpha-hh-hospice.com (found in UVU BESC major Internship email)-

I chose this as I have a personal testimony of the benefits of hospice for both family and patient. I have had very positive experiences (well as positive as they could be as my Dad, Grandfather and Mother-In-Law were the hospice patients. The kindness, love, support and personal care given to terminal patients is a huge blessing to the emotional, psychological and physical well being of the family members as well as the patients. This internship would provide me with experiences that often are not received until you are in the career actually working with patients and their families. It would also give me an opportunity to give back to other families suffering loss, sadness and stress of having a terminal family member to care for.

Friends of Animals of Utah-Purple Paw Domestic Violence Outreach Program- www.foautah.org (found in UVU BESC major Internship email)-

I selected this internship as I feel that comfort and assistance can be provided to those in need in a varity of ways. More often than not, a persons pets hold a much dearer place in a family than that of a pet. Often they are just like children to an individual and to have a place for them to go while they get help and back on their feet is an amazing service to provide. Having a place for a pet to go may be the one thing needed to have a person start on the path to helping themselves out of a domestic violence situation.

The Academy for Child Advocacy & Family Support (ACAFS) http://www.utahfamilyacademy.org/ (found on UVU job board)

The family is such an important part of who we are and what we stand for, so I feel this internship would be a good place to gain experience in helping families that are struggling to keep things together and those who have already split try to keep the kids from being pawns in their struggle to injure the opposite party as much as possible. Protecting the kids is of utmost importance as they are not in a position to help themselves.

WINs Internship (Womens Information Network)- Marsha Haynes UVU Internship Dept (found on UVU job board)-

I feel this would be a great internship, depending on which one you choose, as it is a different route to protecting the family. When women are supported, educated, empowered and loved by someone who sees their potential, it impacts generations. I think this would be a good place to gain a global perspective on the family and relationships women around the world engage in and what can be done to protect the family thru motherhood, sisterhood and love.

Hoofbeats to Healing-Equine-Assisted therapy- http://www.hoofbeatstohealing.org

I chose this as there was a similar therapy place in the early 80's when I was growing up that provide a similar type of service to families with handicapped children. Again, animals are amazing and innocent and they touch a place in humans that is not reachable by any other means. Helping an individual who has limited mobility, abilities and cognitive restrictions move on their own is a wonderful thing. A child who is bound to a chair and unable to have much control over their life, choices or future can be liberated a top a horse. the movements, feeling of empowerment and control is psychologically something that can be provided only in this situation. It cannot be simulated and is something that has to be experienced with another warm blooded mammal. This freedom paired with the motion therapy that has been found to be so beneficial is something special and indeed an experience to make one think strongly about their motivation for choice in career and how fulfilled they might or might not be.

Comment:
Crystal Woods-

I love how your direction for your internships is very humanistic and how you want to provide service and understanding to others by helping them through emotional issues and situations

Cassidi Moosman-
I think you have chosen a wide variety of internships to basically try on many different career hats to see what fits best. I love that they are all different fields in order narrow down what you may or may not like from a great variety.

L13 - Job Shadow

Esme Anderson, APRN/FNP
Utah Valley University
Student Health Center

Questions & Answers: (Each question immediately followed by the answer.)
Your overall impression of the career and the job shadow experience. (Was this helpful to you, why?  Do you want to pursue this career in the

  1. What is the difference between a Physicians Assistant and Nurse Practitioner?
    1. A PA is required to work under the direction of a MD as part of a medical team, is trained to provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services, as directed by the MD they take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and X rays, make diagnoses and treat minor injuries.
    2. NP’s are registered nurses with a masters degree that have clinical experience and licensing, which allows them to diagnose and manage most common illness that generally does not require a MD’s attention. They can work independently and prescribe certain medications without a MD’s approval. NPs largely focus on health maintenance, disease prevention, counseling and patient education in a wide variety of settings
  2. Do you think it is a good way to get into nursing by becoming an LPN first then finishing RN and further?
    1. Esme was originally educated in nursing at Florence Nightingale School in London so she has worked internationally. Then in the U.S. she got her LPN and kept working at her education until she became an NP. She felt that depending on your goal starting as a LPN is a good start, however there are not as many LPN jobs in hospitals so you may have to work in a care facility for a bit.
  3. What kind of facilities do you work at now and what do you like best?
    1. She works at UVU, Tri-City Medical  and her own clinic, Athena Women’s Clinic. Esme likes it all. She loves working with the little kids that come into Tri-City, UVU students and patients at the woman’s clinic as they are all different and unique situations. I get the impression she just loves what she does and loves helping people.
  4. What do you do at the Athena Women’s Clinic?
    1. Working at the women’s clinic, Esme works with women to balance their hormones and deal with the changes women go through as they age and their bodies change. The clinic is not just a cookie cutter type of place, she works with her patients to discover what is missing and individualizes a plan for each patient to help them get back to their happy, healthy younger self. She really likes working with the women who are her patients.
  5. How do you ensure that patients are not trying to come in to just get prescription medication.
    1. There are signs that show when patients are trying to get meds. She keeps a careful eye on her patients in addition to careful records to keep everyone safe and out of risk. They have specific procedures to deal with situations like this.

  1. What is your daily schedule and how do you manage patients and keeping up with everything.
    1. Having a great team to work with is important as they all watch each others backs. She keeps 3 sections of time open to see emergency patients though the day and she and the other NP help with each others patients to keep everyone and everything running smooth.
  2. What do you think of being an international nurse?
    1. I want to be an international nurse and work in Ireland some time and wanted to know what she thought. She said that working overseas is quite interesting and there is a lot to be gained on both sides of the pond. The opportunity to interact with individuals in other countries and see how medicine is practiced elsewhere.

  1. It really wasn’t a question: I saw 2 patients with her and she showed me what she charted, what she saw and heard during the exam so I could understand the difference of what she heard in the lungs (as both were respiratory related with this nasty air) and what you heard and saw the patient do when taking a deep breath and exhale. We discussed the symptoms and how she determines what meds to prescribe.

I just loved the time I spent with her and really felt that if I can get through the education that I would love to be a NP eventually. I was really grateful for the time and experience I got during the job shadow.

L5 Personality/Interest Assessment

L5- Personality/Interest Assessment

ASSESSMENTS REVIEW SHEET

For this assignment, you will use the results from your Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Strong Interest Inventory (SII) assessments to determine some particular occupations and majors to research.

MBTI Report

1.         List your reported type. (Example: ESTJ) INFP

2.            According to your report, what are some of the characteristics that best describe your personality type? Communicate by talking, Like Variety and action, Like quiet for concentration Desire new challenges and possibilities, focus on improving things/like change, enjoy learning new skills, ask why things are as they are, good working with people, respond more to peoples feelings than their ideas, tend to be sympathetic, dislike conflict, concerned with how actions impact others, uses lists as reminders of things to do someday, adapt well to changing situations, may postpone unpleasant jobs, get a lot accomplished last minute before deadlines

3.              Refer to the list of the 50 most popular occupations page or go to http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bestjobs/2010/ Read the list of occupations and list the ones that you would like to explore below.
RN, Respiratory Therapist, Auditor, Psychologist-counselor, school counselor or,                         artist

4.              How do you believe the occupations you have chosen to explore fit with your personality preferences?  Explain how these occupations allow you to work in your preferred work environment. I was really surprised that this fit me quite closely. I feel that these occupations will be in the type of environment that I thrive in. However, I adapt quite easily so I can mix in most environments and still be ok.

SII Report

1.         List your general occupational theme code. (Example EAS)
            CSA
2.              List your 5 Basic Interests Scales and determine what type of interest they represent from the following: vocational, educational, leisure activities, personal interest. (Examples might include: religion-personal interest, teaching-leisure, healthcare-vocational)
a.     Healthcare Services (s)
b.     Medical Science (I)
c.     Counseling & Helping (s)
d.     Taxes & Accounting (C)
e.     Finance & Investing (C)

3.              Refer to pages 5, 6, and 7 of your SII profile.  Look at all the occupational scales you scored highest in (generally 40 or above), or that have a combination of your theme code.  List the occupations from the scales that you might like to research.
a.     RN, Respiratory Therapist, Instructional Coordinator

4.         For the following questions refer to Personal Style Scales on page 8 of your SII profile.

A.            Look at your “Work Style” rating.  What does your score suggest to you in relation to the occupations you listed above?
1.     I am in the middle leaning towards working with people and helping others. I fall in the mid range because I can work with people and not hate it because I am good at it and it is what needs to be done, however given a choice, I would prefer to work on my own.

B.            Look at your “Learning Environment” rating.  How do the educational requirements of the occupations you listed fit with your interest to pursue additional training?   I learn by doing and appreciate short-term training to achieve personal goals, again I am in the middle leaning more towards more practical learning environment and hands on work.

C.            Look at your “Leadership Style” rating.  How do these occupations fit your personal style? Yes and no, ultimately I will need to be shown or taught things that are only found on the job and need to be practical and some are things that need to be taught in the classroom…I think this fits right in. Again, I am in the mid range so I can lean either way.

D.            Look at your “Risk Taking/Adventure” rating.  Explain how the occupations do or do not match your risk taking style. I am smack right in the middle of the grid which is interesting as again I can go either way. Risk Taking is against my comfort zone.

5.          What college majors are suggested for your theme code that you find interesting?  CSA Conventional, Social and Artistic=1.Health Care Services (S),2.Medical Science (I), 3. Counseling & Helping (S), 4. Taxes & Accounting (C), 5. Finance & Investing (C).

6.               Of your top 10 occupations, list 3 you are most interested in and the educational
       preparation required for each.
1.     Registered Nurse (SI)
                                            i.     Nursing Program graduation and passing the NCLEX
2.     Respiratory Therapist (IRA)
                                            i.     RT Program graduation and passing the state boards
3.     Loan Officer (oddly I have done this for over 15 years already) or Counselor (not sure if this is a medical counselor or financial counselor. If it is medical I would like it, not too sure about doing mortgage again)
                                            i.     Loan Officer requires Mortgage classes taken and passing the Federal and State Mortgage Officer Exams
ii.     Counselor…did not find an actual mortgage counselor position, but I would assume it is the same education as the LO position. Medical counselor requires graduation with a Bachelors Degree in that field, and depending on what kind of counselor you want to be (MAF allows practicing with a masters degree and passing state boards and other counselors have the same requirements but need to get a Phd in their field.

Occupations not listed on MBTI or SII

1.         List any occupations you are interested in that were not listed on your MBTI or SII reports. None really..

Meet with a Career Counselor at ACC

1.         Make an appointment to review your assessment reports with a counselor in the Academic Counseling Center. (LC402, 801-863-8425) ~Done Thursday January 10, 2013 met with Robert

List several comments or suggestions made by the counselor regarding selection of a career or major and/or your assessment results. Robert suggested that my concerns about struggling through the sciences is a valid issue and that I just need to decide and go for it. He thought that I would be really good in hospital administration or education as well.

L8 - Informational Interview Report

L8 - Informational Interview Report

Interviewee: Jeanette Langston, BSRN
In interviewing Jeanette Langston, who is a dear friend and the person who has encouraged me to pursue a career in nursing, I received valuable information that I believe will be quite helpful as I finish school and through my career. The first set of questions I asked were about schooling and what the industry feels is the best degree to obtain to be successful and to be marketable. Jeanette, like me, went to school as a second career while her kids were school age. Discussing schooling with her helped me to relax a bit as I have been very stressed about my health and it’s impact on my grades. Her advise to me was to just do the best I can and not stress about how many delays I have experienced because of my health. We discussed the importance of getting into a nursing program and not working during the program as it really impacts how productive you can be. One of the questions I asked addressed if it was better to have an associates or bachelors degree and she said that it really was a non-issue unless someone wants to work in administration. The pay scale for nurses is not affected at this point at most hospitals by whether or not they have a bachelor degree. I was also concerned about the amount of nurses that are going to be needed and if there was talk about the nursing shortage being over and the market flooded with nurses. She indicated that is only an issue in some places and that nursing is a great career to be in as there is always a need. The position found may not be in your ideal setting, but jobs are out there. As nursing has been a career for a very long time, positions are continually created to replace those who take retirement.
My second series of questions were about the job itself and the positive and negative aspects. To me, they seemed to really be the same as any other job. People who don’t want to work as hard as they should, not showing up for shifts creating understaffed shifts and dealing with co-workers who do not respect you or your ideas. She said some doctors are amazing to work with and others are jerks and have low opinions of everyone around them. She supervises the New Mother floor, Labor and Delivery and Pediatrics so she has worked in some of the areas I would love to work in. She said they are challenging areas to work in. I asked what is most challenging in working with the New Mothers and pediatrics and she said the hardest thing is death and or sever damage from illness. The most negative or hardest aspect of the job was seeing mothers and fathers that she knows are unfit walking out with a beautiful new infant or child knowing that they may be back possibly and in worse than the last time. Also, seeing a mom who has obviously done drugs or alcohol and you know that they are going home to the same situations that most likely will still involve substance abuse.Overall, she indicated that it is a wonderful career full of opportunities to develop new skills, there are multiple areas to work in so there is a lot of variety, continual learning requirements of additional classes to maintain licensing and to provide excellent care to those in need.
In conclusion, I feel these are things that fit my talents and I am so excited for the opportunity to prove myself, help others and make a difference.  While preparing the questions for the interview, I found myself listening and thinking through what it means to be a nurse and what challenges other than the basic duties of the job would present. To see a child go home, knowing they may be back due to illness complications or situations at home will be very difficult and I really don’t how I would react. One part of the occupation that makes me nervous is how I will deal with death and if overtime I will become desensitized to all of the things you see as a nurse. During our discussion, I did pay attention to my concerns about working on a dual degree and decided that it will be so helpful to have had all the Behavioral Science and Psychology classes I have taken. Nurses do not only deal with the patient, we deal with families and need to be professional yet empathetic in taking care of them. The small acts of service we provide to patients and their family members can be the one thing that helps them thru the trauma and sadness they are dealing with until they are actually ready to deal with their situations. Time can only tell and I am anxious to get to the point where I can work in a hospital to start building my career and reputation
